Background information

Deputy Billy Kelleher: I move amendment No. 6:
In page 19, between lines 3 and 4, to insert the following:
“The prescriber shall ensure that he/she prescribes in the most cost-effective manner by only writing the common or International Non-proprietary Name of the medicinal product on the prescription except where in the opinion of the prescriber it would be inappropriate to do so from a patient safety and welfare perspective.”.

The Bill’s purpose is to save taxpayers’ money with generic substitution where practical and possible. This amendment is proposing that there should be mandatory generic prescribing using INNs (International Non-proprietary Named medicinal products) and that if this is not done a reason should be provided - for example, if the prescriber, on the basis of his or her reasoned opinion, provided the branded product because he or she deemed it was best for the health, safety and welfare of the patient, nothing more or less.
