This is a letter from three DCU masters students who are currently participating in a Social Media, Journalism and Democracy class. We are running a campaign called “In this Day and Age , Can’t we do Better?” which seeks an improved system of leave in Ireland for parents of newborns. In light of this, we are wondering if the current government has any plans to introduce paid paternity leave in Ireland? At the moment there’s no legal entitlement to paternity leave, it’s provided at the employer’s discretion. Not only does this mean fathers get to spend very little time with their children, it also means the mother’s career, rather than the father’s always gets put on hold.
If you could give let us know where the present government stands on this issue and what plans, if any, are in place to change this.
Thanks very much,
Mary (Laois/Offaly constituency!) Fionnuala and Paula
