Dear Mr. Shatter,
with the advent of affordable 3D printing technology that is capable of producing firearms, has there been (or are there any plans for) discussion of regulating sales of such machines in Ireland?
30/05/2013 - 17:13
Dear Mr Hayes
I am directed by the Minister for Justice, Equality & Defence, Mr Alan
Shatter T.D., to refer to your email dated 28/05/2013 regarding affordable
3D printing technology
I can advise that this matter is being kept under review. All aspects of
firearms in Ireland - whether they be ownership or retail or usage - are
tightly controlled and existing penalties are in place for anyone in
possession of such a firearm without a licence or for using it or a replica
firearm in a crime.
These printers have a legitimate use and no regulation would take place
without consultation with the Minister or Jobs, enterprise and Innovation.
