According to recent Government figures, absenteeism among local authority figures is double that of workers in the private sector. Why do you think this is and how do you propose we mitigate it?

The Local Government Audit Service of the Department worked closely with the Local Authority Sector, the County and City Managers Association (CCMA) , the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) and all 34 city and county councils, in reviewing the management of sickness absence.
The sickness absence rate for local authorities in 2011 is 5.19% or 11.78 days.
Circular Letter LG (P) 09/2013 ‘Target Reduction in Absenteeism’ issued 29 November 2013, sets a target for reduction at 3.5%, the wider public sector target, was issued to local authorities at the same time as issue of the VFM report. The report makes recommendations on ways of improving existing procedures, practices and systems, thereby promoting efficiency and cost effectiveness.
The report’s key recommendations include full reporting of sickness absence costs and performance against targets for efficiency and effectiveness savings nationally. The Attendance Management Committee comprising representatives of the Department, local authorities and the LGMA will assist with and monitor implementation of the recommendations.
