Seanad - out-dated, irrelevant house based on patronage and privilege - Patrick Nulty TD

Posted on 2013/10/02 by pcole at 15:34

Pat Nulty

I strongly welcome this referendum. The Seanad is an archaic and irrelevant body devoid of any democratic legitimacy. While individual senators may make positive contributions or deliver certain insights that is not a justification for maintaining an aspect of our governance system which is deeply undemocratic.

In a democracy citizens participate based on equal citizenship not because they are members of a local authority, have a university degree or happen to be flavour of the month with the Taoiseach of the day – that is how senators are chosen.

Seanad Referendum – There are no winners here - Johnny Fallon

Posted on 2013/10/02 by pcole at 15:19

The Seanad debate is quite annoying. We are spending a huge amount of time and effort debating something that will not make one scintilla of difference to people’s lives no matter what the outcome of the referendum is.

That said, the government has insisted that it’s necessary to have this debate here and now and so it is forced upon us.

I have made clear in the past that I would vote for abolition if the government could guarantee the €20 million savings would be ring fenced and spent on something worthwhile.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good campaign - Senator Averil Power

Posted on 2013/09/26 by pcole at 09:15

Senator Averil Power

Last week Fine Gael’s claim that abolition of the Seanad would save €20 million was exposed as a lie by the Oireachtas Commission. A week later, its deliberately misleading posters are still in place. It seems they’ve decided not to let the truth get in the way of a good campaign.

Instead, they’ve added another bogus claim to their campaign. Posing with a billboard of a sad Rottweiler, Richard Bruton asked us on Monday ‘What kind of watchdog only barks every fifty years?’ The
subheading of the billboard declared that the Seanad hasn’t delayed a bill since 1964.

Abolish the Seanad and put an end to 75 years of failure - Kevin Rafter

Only the professional political class will miss the Seanad if it is abolished. For the last 75 years it has been populated by politicians who spend most of their time trying to get elected to the Dáil.

The Seanad's power is that it legislates - Joanna Tuffy TD

Posted on 2013/09/24 by pcole at 13:19

Joanna Tuffy TD

Seanad abolitionists point to the fact the Seanad's power under Article 23 of the Constitution to delay bills has rarely been used. They cite the 1964 Pawnbrokers Bill as the last time the Seanad used this power under Article 23.

Let’s focus on what matters and get rid of the Seanad sideshow - Dr Eoin O'Malley

Posted on 2013/09/24 by pcole at 10:29

Dr Eoin O'Malley

No one wants to keep the current Seanad.

Even those advocating a no vote admit that after 75 years this chamber is a failure. It’s a mark of its failure that we are talking about the potential of the septuagenarian chamber rather than its achievements.

They try to point to the eminence of some former senators such as TK Whitaker and Mary Robinson, but we know that these are people who made their mark elsewhere. In Mary Robinson’s case it was in the Courts and TK Whitaker as a public servant.
