The Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2013 to give effect to a number of social welfare measures announced in Budget 2014. Some of the changes include:

(a) Standardising the rates of Maternity Benefit and Adoptive Benefit,

(b) Increasing the number of waiting days for Illness Benefit and Injury Benefit,

(c) Ending the payment of the Bereavement Grant,

(d) Reducing the rate of Jobseeker’s Allowance for persons aged between 22 and 25 years,

(e) Reducing the rate of Supplementary Welfare Allowance for persons aged between 22 and 25 years,

Today at 2pm Taoiseach Enda Kenny will make a statement in the Upper House on Seanad Reform. It will be Deputy Kenny's first appearance in the Seanad since the Government's referendum to Abolish the Seanad was rejected by the people on October 4th.

At Fine Gael National Conference the Taoiseach committed to extending the Seanad vote to all University graduates and is expected to enact that legislation in due course.

GENDER RECOGNITION BILL 2013

This Bill provides for legal recognition to the acquired gender of transgender persons. This formal legal recognition is for all purposes, including dealings with the State, public bodies and civil and commercial society. It includes the right to marry or enter a civil partnership in the acquired gender and the right to a new birth certificate. The effect of the legal recognition is not retrospective but shall be only from the date legal recognition is provided by means of the issue of a gender recognition certificate.
